My name is Sean Lantto, mountaineer, future astronaut, and creator of Astronautically.

I am currently a spacecraft systems engineer. I received my Master’s in Aerospace Engineering at West Virginia University in May of 2018 where I also got both of my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering in the Spring of 2016.

I’ve been obsessed with space exploration and technology (real and fictional(aka not real yet)) for as long as I can remember, and have always dreamed of drifting through space on my way to another world. Now I am working to leave my mark on (and off) this world by studying and working to advance cosmic exploration, and hopefully inspiring others to along the way.

During my time at WVU, I have had a great many opportunities to pursue my interests in space exploration, and technology including multiple submissions to the RASC-AL design challenges(as well as building an ice mining robot for Mars), designed and built an asteroid anchor for NASA’s Micro-g NExT program, as well as internships with the WV Robotics Technology Center (WVRTC) and the Air Force Research Lab through the ATR Center. My master’s thesis was focused on precise orbit determination for CubeSats using duty cycled GPS measurements, and I was fortunate enough to work with actual flight hardware that launched on Simulation to Flight 1 (STF-1). Now in my career I’ve had the opportunity to work on several missions as a systems engineer, and work across many parts of the design cycle. From OSAM-2(Archinaut-1), to Mars Sample Return, to OSAM-1, and working on component testing for Artemis, and now commercial spacecraft buses.

Outside of all the space related opportunities, I have also worked with the WVU Formula SAE team (building racecars), been a teaching assistant for a mechatronics class, 3d print cosplay items, and am currently building a full-size astromech droid.

While this seems like it may take all my time, there are still a few hours in the day I can do other things I enjoy, such as; hiking, hunting, cooking, lifting, video games, running a spartan race, traveling, and going to Mountaineer games.
